FAQs About Adult Braces

Although braces are typically associated with the younger generation who may not be developing proper tooth alignment, it does not mean that adults cannot benefit from this treatment too. People who shy away from getting the orthodontic treatment that they need because of the fear of being embarrassed around their colleagues are merely doing a disservice to themselves. What they do not realise is that adult braces not only correct your dental imperfections but can also be a huge confidence booster once you are done with the therapy! Another reason why adults may shy away from getting braces is that they do not know what to expect. Here are the answers to some FAQs concerning adult braces.

What types of braces are available?

A majority of people may be wary of adult braces, as they do not want to perambulate with a mouth full of metal. And while metal braces are the staple option around the world, you are not limited to this style of orthodontic treatment. Advancements in dentistry have brought about a range of other options that could make it easier for you to acclimatise to wearing adult braces. The first option you can consider is Invisalign, which comprises transparent aligners that are barely discernible. Another alternative that you could choose is lingual braces, which are installed at the back of your teeth, making them virtually invisible! A consult with your orthodontist should avail you the selection of treatments for you to decide on what will suit you best.

How painful is the fitting process?

Another myth the surrounding adult braces is that fitting them will be excruciatingly painful. The truth of the matter is that the actual fitting of the adult braces is minimally painful. The discomfort that most patients experience is when the orthodontics are tightened in place to ensure they correct the alignment of your teeth. Nevertheless, this discomfort will eventually pass as you become accustomed to having your braces in place. Take note that during your adjustment appointments, you may also experience some soreness, but this is necessary to keep your treatment on track.

What foods can be eaten with braces?

The types of adult braces you choose will ultimately dictate the type of restrictions that will be made to your diet. For example, Invisalign braces are supposed to be taken out before any meal. Hence, you can pretty much retain the same nutrition you had before you got the braces. Metal and lingual braces, on the other hand, are permanent. So you will have to avoid sticky and hard foods with the potential of damaging the wires and brackets.
