Five Tips for Keeping Your False Teeth in Place

Dentures are a lifeline for many people who have lost some or all of their teeth. However, some people experience the frustration of their false teeth frequently shifting out of the correct position. If you struggle to eat or speak without your dentures slipping, try these five tips to get a perfect fit.

1. Stick to Soft Foods at First

It can take a while to get used to dentures. While you are still working your way through the learning curve, you may find it easier to stick to eating softer foods, such as soups, stews, oatmeal, yoghurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream. As you gain confidence, you can gradually begin to experiment with foods that are tougher to chew, such as steak and nuts.

2. Avoid Sticky Substances

Sticky foods like toffees can pull false teeth out of position, forcing you to fumble them back into place. Try to avoid eating sticky sweet treats if you can, instead opting for hard candies that you can suck. It is also a good idea to steer clear of chewing gum. When you need to neutralise breath odor, mouthwash or a sugar-free breath mint can do the job.

3. Handle False Teeth With Care

The part of your dentures that fits over your gums is made from a soft and flexible material. If you use too much force when handling your false teeth, you could permanently bend them out of shape, which means they will no longer fit your mouth. Try to avoid dropping your dentures on a hard floor. Be as gentle as you can when fitting them into place in your mouth.

4. Keep False Teeth Moist

Dentures are designed to work best in a moist environment. Allowing them to dry out can cause the materials to warp, which can affect the fit. If you suffer from dry mouth, sip water throughout the day to keep your false teeth moist. When you take them out at night, soak them in water or a cleaning solution.

5. Use Denture Adhesive

Some people have false teeth that fit perfectly and never have to use a denture adhesive to keep them in place. However, many people find that applying an adhesive paste to the underside of their dentures can help them achieve a more secure fit. Many different varieties of denture adhesives are available, so don't give up if the first one you try doesn't work for you.
